The CYCLES
Nitrogen
The nitrogen cycle is needed for the amino acids in proteins, this cycle is a model of how nitrogen is recycled. About 78% of the air is nitrogen. |
Carbon
The carbon cycle is a biogeochemical cycle in which carbon is exchanged among the biosphere. Carbon is the main component of biological compounds. |
Oxygen
The oxygen cycle is the biogeochemical cycle of oxygen within its four main reservoirs: the atmosphere, the total content of biological matter within the biosphere, the hydrosphere, and the lithosphere/Earth's crust. |
CTAHr
As we went on a journey to Waimanalo, it was a very great learning experience. I learned how to be sustainable and grow things on my own to stay alive. At CTAR we learned how organic plants grow and what things are needed in order to be successful. We learned how to use the plants we grow for eating purposes and meals. The different kinds of plants that were grown there are examples of locally sourced foods and some organic.
FOod security
Food security is the state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. In Hawaii, I do not think we meet this standard. We should change this and increase the growth locally so that we wouldnʻt have to depend on the ships bringing us food here. I also think that this would prepare us better for when a disaster would occur we would be prepared.

The food sustainability we had was very good back then, our ancestors were able to live off of the land and survive while being sustainable. In old Hawaii history we were able to depend on the land. We took care of the land and all it gave us to offer. It was a system that we had running and traded with others.
Locally Sourced meal
In class, we learned about locally sourced foods and how they are grown. Locally sourced foods are sold at farmers markets, local stores and markets. Local foods are a movement of people who prefer to eat foods which are grown or farmed relatively close to the places of sale and preparation. In our economy, buying locally sourced foods is highly suggested. It supports local and chances are the food is grown with no chemicals. So, for my locally sourced meal I had a Papaya grown from the Big Island, Poi from Waiahole, Kalua Pig cooked, caught and made by my uncle Louie. Lastly I had sashimi sliced and caught by my other uncle Bubba. My meal was very hard to make because now days our food and spices gets imported from the U.S.
Our Growing systems
Our group got assigned hydroponics and we are responsible to take good care and monitor the growth of our lettuce plants. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in a water based, nutrient rich solution. This method does not use soil and could be done indoor with the use of water and clay pellets. This way works so well for the plants because it consists of a perfectly based pH solution that is delivered through highly soluble form to the roots of the plants. In our system we are currently growing lettuce and papaya.
